Project Abstract
This research project aims to evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a common chronic inflammatory condition affecting the supporting structures of the teeth and is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. PDT is a promising treatment modality that involves the use of a photosensitizing agent activated by light of a specific wavelength to target and eliminate periodontal pathogens. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of PDT in reducing periodontal inflammation, improving clinical parameters, and promoting periodontal tissue healing. The research methodology includes a comprehensive literature review to establish the current understanding of periodontal disease pathogenesis, conventional treatment modalities, and the mechanism of action of PDT. The study design involves a randomized controlled trial with a sample size of 100 participants with chronic periodontitis. Participants will be divided into two groups one receiving conventional periodontal therapy alone and the other receiving a combination of conventional therapy and PDT. Clinical parameters such as probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, and plaque index will be measured at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months post-treatment. The findings of this study will be analyzed using statistical methods to compare the effectiveness of PDT as an adjunct to conventional periodontal therapy. The discussion will focus on the potential advantages of PDT in targeting periodontal pathogens, promoting tissue healing, and reducing the need for antibiotics in the treatment of periodontal disease. The limitations of the study, including sample size and follow-up period, will be acknowledged, and recommendations for future research will be provided. In conclusion, this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the use of PDT in the treatment of periodontal disease. The results of this study may have implications for improving the outcomes of periodontal therapy and reducing the burden of periodontal disease on individuals and healthcare systems. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance the quality of care for patients with periodontal disease and to promote the adoption of innovative treatment modalities in dentistry.
