The Impact of Police Body Cameras on Use of Force Incidents in Law Enforcement

Project Abstract

The use of police body cameras has become increasingly prevalent in law enforcement agencies worldwide, with the aim of enhancing transparency, accountability, and trust between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. This research study examines the impact of police body cameras on use of force incidents in law enforcement, with a focus on understanding how the presence of body cameras influences officer behavior and the outcomes of encounters with the public. The research begins with a comprehensive literature review that explores existing studies on the effectiveness of police body cameras in reducing use of force incidents and improving police-community relations. The review highlights the various perspectives and findings in this area, providing a solid foundation for the current study. The research methodology employed in this study involves a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative analysis of use of force data from law enforcement agencies that have implemented body cameras with qualitative interviews and surveys of law enforcement officers and community members. The data collected will be analyzed using statistical methods to assess the impact of body cameras on use of force incidents, officer behavior, and community perceptions. The findings of this research are discussed in detail in Chapter Four, where the results of the analysis are presented and interpreted within the context of existing literature.
