Project Abstract

The issue of pump meter fraud in filling stations is a serious concern that undermines consumer trust and affects the integrity of the fuel retail industry. This research project focuses on evaluating pump meter fraud at filling stations in Uyo, Nigeria. The study aims to investigate the prevalence of pump meter fraud, identify the factors contributing to fraudulent practices, and assess the impact of fraud on consumers and the industry as a whole. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining quantitative data analysis of pump meter accuracy with qualitative interviews and surveys with filling station owners, employees, and consumers. The quantitative analysis will involve testing the accuracy of pump meters at various filling stations in Uyo to determine the extent of fraud. This will be complemented by interviews and surveys to gather insights into the motivations behind pump meter fraud, such as profit maximization, lack of regulatory oversight, and pressure to meet sales targets. The findings of the study are expected to shed light on the prevalence and nature of pump meter fraud in Uyo, providing valuable information for regulators, industry stakeholders, and consumers.
