Project Abstract
The maintenance of roads is crucial for sustainable development as it ensures the efficient movement of goods and people, enhances economic activities, and improves overall quality of life. This research project focuses on the maintenance of the Enugu-Onitsha dual carriage way in Nigeria, specifically the section from Tollgate to Ezeokuchukwu in Enugu State. The study aims to investigate the current state of road maintenance along this stretch and propose strategies for sustainable upkeep. The methodology employed in this research includes both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data was collected through field observations, interviews with road maintenance authorities, and surveys with road users. The data collected were analyzed to assess the existing maintenance practices, identify challenges faced in maintaining the road, and explore potential solutions for long-term sustainability. The findings of the study reveal that the Enugu-Onitsha dual carriage way, particularly the Tollgate to Ezeokuchukwu section, faces various maintenance issues such as potholes, erosion, and inadequate signage. These issues not only affect the road's usability but also pose safety hazards to road users. The lack of regular maintenance and funding constraints were identified as key challenges in ensuring the road's upkeep. Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed to improve road maintenance along this stretch. These include the establishment of a dedicated road maintenance fund, increased collaboration between government agencies responsible for road upkeep, and the implementation of routine maintenance schedules. Additionally, community engagement and public awareness campaigns are suggested to promote a sense of ownership and responsibility among road users. Overall, this research underscores the importance of proactive road maintenance for sustainable development. By addressing the maintenance needs of the Enugu-Onitsha dual carriage way from Tollgate to Ezeokuchukwu, this study contributes to the broader discourse on infrastructure development and highlights the significance of well-maintained roads in fostering economic growth and societal well-being. The proposed recommendations aim to guide policymakers, road authorities, and stakeholders in implementing effective maintenance strategies that ensure the long-term sustainability of this critical transport artery.
