Project Abstract
Domestic wastewater treatment in Nigeria is a critical issue due to the increasing population, urbanization, and industrial activities in the country. The inadequate treatment of domestic wastewater poses significant environmental and public health challenges. This study aims to assess the current status of domestic wastewater treatment in Nigeria and explore potential solutions to improve the situation. The research will involve a comprehensive review of existing literature on domestic wastewater treatment technologies and practices in Nigeria. Various treatment methods such as biological treatment, physical-chemical treatment, and advanced oxidation processes will be evaluated in terms of their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and applicability to the Nigerian context. The study will also examine the regulatory framework governing domestic wastewater treatment in the country and identify gaps that need to be addressed. Furthermore, the research will involve field visits to domestic wastewater treatment facilities in different regions of Nigeria to assess their operational status and performance. Interviews with key stakeholders including government officials, environmental agencies, and wastewater treatment plant operators will be conducted to gather insights on the challenges and opportunities in domestic wastewater treatment. Based on the findings, the study will propose recommendations for improving domestic wastewater treatment in Nigeria. These recommendations may include the implementation of decentralized treatment systems, capacity building for wastewater treatment plant operators, public awareness campaigns on proper wastewater management practices, and policy reforms to strengthen regulations on domestic wastewater treatment. Overall, this research aims to contribute to the development of sustainable and effective domestic wastewater treatment strategies in Nigeria. By addressing the challenges associated with domestic wastewater treatment, the study seeks to protect the environment, safeguard public health, and promote sustainable development in the country. The findings of this research can be used by policymakers, environmental agencies, and other stakeholders to guide decision-making and investments in domestic wastewater treatment infrastructure and practices in Nigeria.
