Project Abstract
The rapid urbanization and climate change have posed significant challenges to the management of stormwater in urban areas, leading to increased flooding, water pollution, and strain on existing drainage systems. In response to these challenges, this research project focuses on the development of a sustainable stormwater management system tailored for urban areas. The aim of the study is to design an integrated approach that combines green infrastructure, such as permeable pavements, rain gardens, and green roofs, with traditional grey infrastructure to effectively manage stormwater in urban environments. Chapter One of the research presents an introduction to the problem, providing a background of the study, stating the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and defining key terms. The literature review in Chapter Two explores existing stormwater management practices, the benefits of green infrastructure, challenges faced in urban stormwater management, and successful case studies of sustainable stormwater management systems in urban areas. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology, including data collection methods, analysis techniques, and the design process for the sustainable stormwater management system. The chapter also discusses the selection criteria for green infrastructure components and the integration of grey infrastructure within the system. In Chapter Four, the research findings are presented and discussed in detail. The effectiveness of the sustainable stormwater management system in reducing flooding, improving water quality, enhancing urban aesthetics, and promoting biodiversity is examined. The economic feasibility and long-term sustainability of the system are also evaluated, considering factors such as maintenance requirements and community acceptance. Finally, Chapter Five provides a conclusion and summary of the research project, highlighting key findings, implications for urban planning and policy-making, and recommendations for future research and implementation. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on sustainable stormwater management practices and offers practical insights for creating resilient and environmentally friendly urban environments. Overall, the research project on the development of a sustainable stormwater management system for urban areas aims to address the pressing need for innovative solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of urbanization and climate change on stormwater management. By integrating green and grey infrastructure in a holistic approach, the proposed system offers a promising strategy for enhancing urban resilience, protecting water resources, and promoting sustainable development in urban areas.
