Project Abstract

Small-scale industries play a crucial role in the economic development of any country, particularly in rural areas where they serve as major sources of employment and income generation. However, the management of small-scale industries presents a myriad of challenges that hinder their growth and sustainability. This study focused on investigating the problems of management faced by small-scale industries, with farmers in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State serving as a case study. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques to gather comprehensive insights into the challenges faced by small-scale industries in the study area. The primary data was collected through structured questionnaires and interviews with small-scale farmers, industry experts, and government officials. Secondary data was also obtained from relevant literature sources to support the findings of the study. The findings revealed several key issues affecting the management of small-scale industries in Udi Local Government Area. These included limited access to finance, inadequate infrastructure, lack of technical skills and training, poor market linkages, and inadequate government support. Financial constraints emerged as a significant barrier to the growth of small-scale industries, with farmers struggling to access credit facilities for investment in their businesses. Infrastructure challenges, such as poor road networks and limited access to electricity, also hampered the operational efficiency of small-scale industries in the area. Moreover, the lack of technical skills and training among farmers was identified as a critical issue that hindered their productivity and competitiveness in the market. The study highlighted the importance of capacity-building programs to enhance the skills of small-scale industry players and improve their overall management practices. Additionally, poor market linkages and limited access to markets for small-scale products further constrained the growth potential of these industries. Government support was recognized as crucial in overcoming the challenges faced by small-scale industries in Udi Local Government Area. Policies and programs that provide financial assistance, improve infrastructure, and promote market linkages can significantly enhance the management practices and overall performance of small-scale industries. The study recommended the need for collaborative efforts between government agencies, industry stakeholders, and financial institutions to address the identified challenges and create a conducive environment for the sustainable growth of small-scale industries in the area.

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION

BREIF HISTROY OF FARMERS IN UDI

Udi farmers was established aughst 1989. situated just at the southern end of Afor main market Udi, the farm was set up primarily to receive parboiled rice from local farmers for milling. In addition to this, the farm raises poultry and pigs. The rice milling machines were installed in November 1989. by this period, the piggery house was still being constructed. The actual milling of rice took off by mid-december 1989 and progressed smoothly to the following year. By mid 1990, a new section (the poultry section) was added, including all the necessary equipment for poultry and piggery production. The premises house two giant store apartments and aaa residential structure for some staff members. The entire premises was rounded with a well planned and solidly built fence with three entrances guarded by metal gates.

STAFF RECRUITMENT: various categories of staff were recruited to serve the organisation. These ranged from poultry aand piggery attendants, watchmen, engine and plant operators, finance clerks, cleaner, motor vehicle drivers, sales personnel and a manager. At least one person was recruited from every village that make up town. This was in agreement with the primary aim of the entrepreneur and his sponsor (the Italian Aids society Austria) to help the less priviledged and the rurral populace.

When the entire organisation was fully operational in 1990, the three sections were under the control of a manager who organises and co-ordinates the activities of the milling, piggery and poultry staff. No sstaff was permanently attached to a particularr department and where a staff performs his function each day depends on the wishes and dictates of the manager. The organisation practised shift duties aand no staff can say with certanly when he or she would be morning or afternoon duty as this also depends on the ditches of the manager.

The organization grew rapidly for some years, and has more than two thirds of the rice farmers in the town as its customer. The piggery and poultry sections flourished very well. Eggs, table birds, pork and poultry droppings were available in the market. These things were bought with ease and at reduced prices. Infact customers trouped to the farm to mill their rice because of reduced prices and good service given them. There was serious competition among this farm and other ricee milling establishements in the town. Infact, Udi faarmers became the talk of the town.

1.2 PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE STUDY

However, this growth cannot be aachieved without some prblems. There was no permanent source of good water for the birds, pigs and filling the tanks for the water cooling machines. There was also the problems of stock replacement especially in piggerrry section where the stock is imported from overseas. Bad roads, insufficient power supply incompetent managerial personnel and lack of sufficient capital militate against the farm. The result is that today, the poultry department has seized operation while the piggery section is heading towards education.however, only the milling section is operating with some difficulties caused by high prices of its milling service.

1.3 PROBLEMS THAT THE STUDY WILL BE CONERNED WITH

Udi faarmrss enjoy government protection and promotion to encourage its growth just like other small scale industries in Nigeria. In spite of this, many problems militate against the farm and these includedd the following:

Lack of competent hands to manage the poultry section.this had led to the recent chosure of the poultry section.

stock replacement posed great problem to the piggery section. The exotic breed of pigs imported from switze land do not usaully get to the farm when required. This has led to significant decrease in the number of stock availabel.

There was no proper divission of labour I Udi farmeerss, consequently there was no proper staff performance appraisal and evaluation.

There was no good and permanent source of water supply. The birds and pigs were fed with polluted and muddy water. Mortality rate of the birds were high and the tanks serving as reservours for cooling the rice millss had leak ages all over.

The ideaa of recruiting staff from all the village that make up the town up the town was a bad management style. The result of this was the recruitment of unqualified and incompetent staff.

Udi farmers was pricing out itself from market. Charging of high price per bushel of rice milled resulted to loss of maany customers.

THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING THE AREA

The importance of high protein intaake in the diet of man cannot be over emphasized. The replacement of warn-out tissues, maintainance of good health and growth and protection aagainst disease attack are some of the importance of protein intake. Udi farmers provided these needs inform of eggs, table bird and pork for human consumption. Also poultry ddroppings are made available for growing of vegetables and other crops. Carbohydrates requirements and little quality of proteins are provided by the rice which udi farmer mill for the employed school leavers are not certain because of the dividing condition of the farm. The survival of the farm is the hope of these people.
