Project Abstract
The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Nigeria was established in 1999 with the aim of providing accessible and affordable healthcare services to all Nigerians. Over the years, the scheme has encountered various issues and challenges that have hindered its effective management and operations. This research project aims to examine the management of the NHIS in Nigeria, focusing on the issues, problems, and prospects associated with the scheme. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Data will be collected through interviews with key stakeholders in the healthcare sector, including policymakers, healthcare providers, and NHIS beneficiaries. In addition, a survey will be conducted to gather quantitative data on the perception and experiences of NHIS beneficiaries. The research will identify key issues and challenges facing the NHIS in Nigeria, such as poor funding, inadequate infrastructure, lack of transparency, and inefficiencies in the system. These issues have contributed to low enrollment rates and limited access to quality healthcare services for many Nigerians. The study will also explore the prospects for improving the management of the NHIS, including potential policy reforms, increased funding, and better governance structures. By examining the management of the NHIS in Nigeria, this research project aims to provide valuable insights into the current state of the scheme and offer recommendations for addressing its challenges. The findings of the study will contribute to the existing literature on healthcare financing in Nigeria and inform policymakers, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders on strategies for improving the NHIS and ensuring universal healthcare coverage for all Nigerians.
Project Overview
<p>
The aim of this study is to find out how the National Health Insurance Scheme is managed. This is against the background of the need to highlight its strengths and identify sources of its shortcomings. Data were then collected from both primary and secondary sources. The main instrument used in collecting the data is questionnaire. The data were then presented in tables as frequency distribution. The techniques of frequency and percentage were applied in analysing the data. The following are the major findings of the study: The NHIS was introduced against the background of poor state of the national healthcare system. The scheme aims at giving all Nigerians access to good healthcare services, ensure equitable distribution of healthcare costs and facilities and high standard of Healthcare services. The scheme is funded through joint contributions by government and workers. The NHIS regulates the scheme while the managers are the HMOS. Clinical and laboratory services are provided by HSPs.
