Project Abstract

Digital transformation (DT) has emerged as a critical driver of competitive advantage and resilience for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing economies, yet its actual impact on sustainability outcomes remains uneven and context-dependent. This study investigates how DT adoption influences the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of SMEs across selected developing regions, examining the pathways through which digital technologies reshape operational efficiency, market access, innovation capacity, and stakeholder engagement. Employing a sequential mixed-methods design, the research combines a cross-sectional survey of 350 SMEs with in-depth interviews of 40 executives and IT managers to capture both breadth and depth of DT practices, including cloud computing, e-commerce, data analytics, digital marketing, supply chain technology, and cyber security. The quantitative analysis uses structural equation modeling to test a comprehensive framework linking DT capabilities (digital literacy, organizational agility, data governance, and technology integration) to sustainability performance indicators (revenue growth, cost reduction, carbon footprint, workplace well-being, and social impact). The qualitative strand provides contextual understanding of enabling factors and barriers such as regulatory environments, access to finance, infrastructure gaps, human capital, and vendor ecosystems, offering insights into how SMEs balance short-term cost concerns with long-term value creation. The study also assesses differential effects across sectoral groups (manufacturing, services, and trade), firm size (micro, small, and medium), and levels of digital maturity. Findings reveal that DT positively affects sustainability through multiple, interlinked mechanisms improved operational resilience via real-time data and automation; expanded market reach and customer loyalty through omni-channel strategies; enhanced innovation output driven by data-driven decision-making; and strengthened governance and risk management facilitated by integrated information systems. However, the magnitude of impact is contingent on underlying absorptive capacity, strategic alignment, and access to enablers such as scalable IT infrastructure, digital skills training, and supportive policy frameworks. Environmental benefits are most pronounced where DT is coupled with process optimization and sustainable sourcing, while social sustainability gains arise from improved employee empowerment and inclusive digital inclusion of underserved communities. The paper discusses policy and managerial implications, proposing a staged DT maturity model tailored for developing economies, a set of practical capabilities to develop, and a roadmap for SMEs to achieve sustainable growth through digital transformation. The study contributes to theory by integrating digital transformation and sustainability literatures within the SME context of developing economies, and to practice by offering actionable guidance for policymakers, industry associations, and SME leaders seeking to leverage digital technologies for enduring competitiveness and societal value.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

The project looks at how digital changes, like online payments, cloud tools, and social media, affect the survival and growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing economies. It explores whether digital tools help SMEs survive tough economic conditions, compete with larger firms, and reach new customers.

The Problem It Addresses

Many SMEs in developing economies struggle with limited resources, unreliable infrastructure, and access to finance. The project investigates how digital transformation can address these challenges, identify barriers to adopting digital tools, and show which practices most improve sustainability.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Identify the digital tools most commonly used by SMEs in developing economies.
  2. Assess how digital adoption affects SME performance, resilience, and longevity.
  3. Understand barriers to digital transformation and ways to overcome them.
  4. Provide practical recommendations for SMEs and policymakers to enhance sustainability.

What You Will Do Step by Step

1) Review existing studies on digital tools for SMEs. 2) Select a country or region and recruit SME participants. 3) Collect data through surveys and interviews. 4) Analyze data to find links between digital use and sustainability indicators. 5) Identify main challenges and success factors. 6) Draft recommendations for SMEs and government bodies. 7) Compile findings into a final report.

Expected Outcome

Clear evidence showing which digital practices support SME sustainability, a list of practical steps for adoption, and policy suggestions to foster digital-enabled SME growth in developing economies.
