Project Abstract

Crown gall disease caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a significant problem in horticulture, affecting various crops including roses and tomatoes. This study aimed to investigate the potential of garlic extract as a natural and sustainable method to prevent crown gall in rose and tomato plants. The experiment involved treating plants with different concentrations of garlic extract and assessing the incidence and severity of crown gall symptoms. Results showed that the application of garlic extract significantly reduced the development of crown gall in both rose and tomato plants. Plants treated with higher concentrations of garlic extract exhibited lower incidence and severity of crown gall symptoms compared to the control group. This indicates the potential of garlic extract as an effective biocontrol agent against crown gall disease. Further analysis revealed that garlic extract treatment enhanced the plant's defense mechanisms, resulting in increased resistance to Agrobacterium tumefaciens infection. The extract appeared to stimulate the plant's natural defense pathways, leading to a reduction in tumor formation and overall disease severity. Moreover, the study found that garlic extract application did not have any adverse effects on plant growth or development. Plants treated with garlic extract showed similar growth patterns, flowering, and fruiting characteristics as the control group, indicating the compatibility of garlic extract with rose and tomato plants. Overall, the results suggest that garlic extract has the potential to be used as a preventive measure against crown gall disease in roses and tomatoes. Its natural origin, effectiveness in reducing disease incidence, and compatibility with plant growth make it a promising alternative to chemical pesticides for disease management. Further research is needed to optimize application methods, concentrations, and frequency to maximize the protective effects of garlic extract against crown gall and ensure its practicality for commercial horticultural practices.
