Project Abstract

Urban green spaces are critical reservoirs of biodiversity, offering unique opportunities for the conservation of medicinal plants amidst expanding cityscapes. This study aimed to assess the diversity and conservation status of medicinal plants within selected urban green areas, emphasizing their ecological significance and potential contributions to local healthcare practices. The research employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, including systematic sampling, plant identification through botanical keys, and ethnobotanical surveys with local communities to understand traditional uses. A total of 150 plant species belonging to 45 families were documented, with 52 identified as medicinally valuable based on ethnobotanical data. The diversity indices indicated a moderate level of species richness, with a predominance of herbs and shrubs adapted to urban conditions. Conservation status assessments, based on IUCN criteria and local anthropogenic pressures, revealed that approximately 18% of the medicinal species were at risk of decline, primarily due to habitat destruction, overharvesting, and invasive species encroachment. Data analysis highlighted key factors influencing medicinal plant distribution, including proximity to human settlements and availability of native flora. The study also identified specific species that are both highly used locally and at higher conservation risk, underscoring the urgent need for targeted conservation efforts. Furthermore, the research explored the potential of urban green spaces as cultural heritage sites and educational platforms for fostering awareness on medicinal plant conservation. Recommendations included the implementation of sustainable harvesting practices, community involvement in conservation programs, and integration of medicinal plant knowledge into urban planning policies. The findings contribute valuable insights into the role of urban ecosystems in maintaining medicinal plant biodiversity and their potential for sustainable utilization. The study underscores the importance of strategic conservation approaches tailored to urban contexts, promoting biodiversity preservation while supporting traditional medicine and community health. Overall, the research provides a comprehensive baseline for policymakers, conservationists, and urban planners to develop effective strategies that balance urban development with ecological sustainability and cultural preservation. This study highlights the multifaceted benefits of conserving medicinal plants in city environments and advocates for concerted efforts to protect these valuable biological resources for future generations.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

This project explores the variety of medicinal plants found in urban green spaces like parks, gardens, and roadside areas. It aims to identify which medicinal plants grow naturally in these areas and how common or rare they are. The study also looks at how well these plants are being protected or threatened.

The Problem It Addresses

Many medicinal plants are disappearing quickly because of urban development, pollution, and overharvesting. This is a problem because these plants are important for traditional medicine and maintaining biodiversity. The project fills the gap by documenting which medicinal plants still exist in cities and how vulnerable they are, helping efforts to conserve them.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Identify the different medicinal plants growing in selected urban green spaces.
  2. Assess how abundant or rare each plant species is in these areas.
  3. Understand the current state of conservation for these plants.
  4. Provide recommendations for protecting and managing these medicinal plants effectively.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Select several urban green spaces to study based on size and location.
  2. Visit the selected sites and record the medicinal plants present, using photographs and plant samples.
  3. Identify each plant species using plant books or experts.
  4. Count how many individual plants of each species are present to determine their abundance.
  5. Evaluate how threatened each plant is by factors like pollution, human activity, or habitat loss.
  6. Gather information from local communities or plant experts about the uses and significance of these plants.
  7. Analyze the data to find out which plants are most at risk and which are thriving.
  8. Prepare a report discussing findings and suggesting ways to conserve these medicinal plants.

Expected Outcome

By the end of the project, it is expected that a comprehensive list of medicinal plants in urban green spaces will be developed. The study will also reveal which plants need urgent protection and recommend ways to conserve them. This information can help city planners, conservationists, and local communities in safeguarding these valuable plant resources for future generations.
