Project Abstract
Ocimum gratissimum, commonly known as "Scent leaf," is a popular herb widely used for its medicinal properties in traditional medicine. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical constituents of the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum leaves. The plant material was collected, dried, powdered, and extracted using methanol. The extract was then subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening to identify the presence of various bioactive compounds. The results revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, glycosides, and phenolic compounds in the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum. Alkaloids are known for their pharmacological activities such as analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Flavonoids exhibit antioxidant properties and play a crucial role in preventing oxidative stress-related diseases. Tannins possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Saponins have been reported to have antifungal, antiviral, and anticancer activities. Steroids are important for their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Glycosides are known for their cardiotonic and anticancer properties. Phenolic compounds are potent antioxidants that help in scavenging free radicals and preventing cell damage. The presence of these phytochemical constituents in the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum highlights the potential medicinal benefits of this plant. Further studies are warranted to isolate and characterize the individual compounds responsible for these pharmacological activities. The findings of this study provide valuable information for the development of new therapeutic agents from Ocimum gratissimum for the treatment of various health conditions.
