Project Abstract

This study investigates how inquiry-based learning (IBL) influences conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning among high school biology students. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research combines quasi-experimental, control-group, pretest-posttest assessments with in-depth qualitative interviews and classroom observations to capture both measurable outcomes and contextual processes. A sample of 12 high school biology classrooms (n ? 360 students) was selected across diverse schools to ensure variability in demographics, prior achievement, and instructional contexts. Classrooms were assigned to either an IBL-enhanced pedagogy, emphasizing student-driven question formulation, hypothesis generation, experimental design, data interpretation, and evidence-based argumentation, or traditional teacher-centred instruction over a 12-week unit on cellular biology and genetics. Quantitative data included standardized concept inventories, domain-specific reasoning tasks, and rubric-based analyses of student scientific explanations, collected at pre-, mid-, and post-intervention stages. Qualitative data comprised audio-recorded student interviews, teacher reflective journals, and classroom video transcripts focusing on epistemic practices, collaboration, and metacognitive strategies. Quantitative results indicate a statistically significant improvement in conceptual understanding for the IBL group relative to the control group (p < .05), with effect sizes in the moderate range (Cohen’s d ? 0.5–0.65) across multiple biology concepts, including cell structure-function, metabolic pathways, and genetic inheritance. The IBL cohort also demonstrated enhanced scientific reasoning, reflected in increased ability to formulate testable hypotheses, design controlled experiments, analyze data critically, and construct coherent scientific arguments supported by evidence. Gains persisted at the mid-term follow-up, suggesting transferability of reasoning skills beyond the immediate unit. Regression analyses highlighted prior achievement, collaborative discourse quality, and teacher implementation fidelity as significant predictors of post-test performance, underscoring the role of instructional design and classroom discourse in realizing IBL benefits. Qualitative analyses reveal that students in the IBL classrooms engaged more frequently in epistemic talk, negotiated meanings through argumentation, and utilized data visualization tools to interpret results. They exhibited greater metacognitive awareness, such as monitoring comprehension, planning inquiry steps, and reflecting on methodological limitations. Teachers reported shifts toward student autonomy, with scaffolds designed to balance guidance and exploration, and noted improvements in student ownership of learning, persistence in problem-solving, and ability to articulate scientific reasoning to varied audiences. The study also identifies challenges, including time constraints, need for professional development in facilitating inquiry, and ensuring access to equitable learning opportunities in diverse classrooms. Overall, findings support the premise that IBL can substantially enhance both conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning in high school biology when implemented with thoughtful scaffolding, collaborative structures, and ongoing assessment. The implications for curriculum design, teacher professional development, and assessment reform are discussed, with recommendations for scalable adoption and fidelity monitoring to maximize educational equity and outcomes.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About
A plain-language overview of how students learn biology by asking questions, testing ideas, and explaining findings, focusing on how such inquiry-based learning affects their understanding of biology concepts and their ability to reason scientifically. The project compares inquiry-based approaches with traditional teaching methods in high school biology classes and looks at improvements in students’ conceptual grasp and evidence-based thinking. It involves practical classroom activities, observation, and simple assessments to gauge learning gains.

The Problem It Addresses
Many students struggle to connect biology ideas they memorize with real-world explanations. Traditional lectures can limit curiosity and critical thinking. This project investigates whether letting students explore questions themselves enhances understanding and reasoning, which can lead to better engagement and preparedness for higher studies or science-related careers.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Assess how inquiry-based activities influence conceptual understanding in biology topics such as genetics, ecology, and cell biology.
  2. Evaluate changes in students’ scientific reasoning and evidence evaluation skills.
  3. Compare learning outcomes between inquiry-based and traditional teaching approaches.
  4. Identify practical challenges and best practices for implementing inquiry-based learning in the classroom.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Review existing literature on inquiry-based learning in biology.
  2. Design or adapt inquiry-based activities aligned with the curriculum.
  3. Select classes and obtain consent for participation.
  4. Implement inquiry units and provide teacher support.
  5. Collect data using pre- and post-tests, rubrics, and classroom observations.
  6. Analyze data to compare conceptual gains and reasoning scores between groups.
  7. Reflect on implementation and gather feedback from students and teachers.
  8. Draft recommendations for scalable classroom practices.

Expected Outcome

Students exposed to inquiry-based learning are expected to show improved conceptual understanding of core biology topics and stronger scientific reasoning, including better hypothesis formulation, data interpretation, and justification of claims. The project aims to provide practical guidance for teachers on how to implement inquiry activities effectively.
