Project Abstract
The reference questions posed to librarians have evolved significantly over the years in terms of both their nature and quantity. This research project aims to explore the changing landscape of reference questions in terms of their types and numbers. By analyzing data collected from multiple libraries over a period of five years, the study seeks to identify patterns and trends in the reference queries received. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative analysis of reference question data and qualitative methods such as interviews with librarians and users. The quantitative analysis will involve categorizing reference questions into different types based on their subject matter and complexity. This categorization will help in understanding the distribution of different types of questions and how it has changed over time. In addition to categorizing the types of reference questions, the study will also examine the number of questions received by libraries. By looking at the overall volume of reference queries, the research aims to determine whether there has been an increase or decrease in the demand for reference services. This analysis will take into account factors such as technological advancements, changing user preferences, and shifts in information-seeking behavior. The qualitative component of the research will provide valuable insights into the reasons behind the changing nature of reference questions. Through interviews with librarians and users, the study will explore factors influencing the types of questions being asked, as well as the challenges faced by librarians in responding to these queries. Understanding the perspectives of both librarians and users will offer a comprehensive view of the evolving reference landscape. Overall, this research project will contribute to the existing literature on reference services by shedding light on the changing nature of reference questions in terms of type and number. The findings of the study will have implications for library practice, helping librarians better understand and anticipate the information needs of their users. By gaining insights into the evolving reference landscape, libraries can adapt their services to meet the changing demands of their patrons effectively.
