Project Abstract
Rabbits are known for their efficient capacity to digest and utilize nutrients from various feed sources. This study investigated the nutrient intake, digestion, and utilization by rabbits when fed diets based on cowpea hull and soybean hull. The experiment involved two groups of rabbits, each group receiving a different diet, one based on cowpea hull and the other on soybean hull. The nutrient intake was measured to evaluate the quantity of essential nutrients consumed by the rabbits. Digestibility was determined by collecting fecal samples and analyzing the undigested components. Additionally, the utilization of nutrients was assessed by measuring growth performance indicators such as weight gain and feed conversion ratio. Results indicated that rabbits fed the cowpea hull-based diet showed comparable nutrient intake levels to those fed the soybean hull-based diet. However, digestibility of nutrients was found to be higher in rabbits consuming the soybean hull diet, suggesting better utilization of nutrients. This was further supported by the growth performance data, which revealed that rabbits on the soybean hull diet exhibited superior weight gain and feed conversion efficiency compared to those on the cowpea hull diet. The findings of this study highlight the importance of feed composition in influencing nutrient intake, digestion, and utilization by rabbits. While both cowpea hull and soybean hull can serve as viable dietary components, soybean hulls appear to offer better digestibility and nutrient utilization for rabbits. The higher nutrient digestibility observed in the soybean hull diet may be attributed to its composition, which likely contains more easily digestible components compared to cowpea hull. These results suggest that rabbit diets formulated with soybean hulls may lead to improved growth performance and efficiency in nutrient utilization. In conclusion, the choice of dietary ingredients plays a crucial role in determining nutrient intake, digestion, and utilization by rabbits. The use of soybean hulls in rabbit diets can enhance nutrient digestibility and utilization, ultimately contributing to better growth performance. Further research may focus on optimizing the inclusion levels of soybean hulls in rabbit diets to maximize nutrient utilization efficiency and overall productivity.
