Project Abstract

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has gained significant popularity in recent years as an efficient and time-effective exercise strategy to improve cardiovascular fitness and muscle adaptations. This research project aimed to investigate the effects of HIIT on cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle adaptations in young adults. The study involved a sample of 50 healthy young adults aged between 18-30 years who were randomly assigned to either a HIIT group or a control group. The research utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative measurements of cardiorespiratory fitness through VO2 max testing and muscle adaptations through muscle biopsies, along with qualitative feedback from participants regarding their experience and perceptions of HIIT. The HIIT group participated in a structured 8-week training program consisting of high-intensity intervals alternated with periods of rest, while the control group maintained their regular physical activity levels. Results from the study demonstrated significant improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness in the HIIT group compared to the control group, as indicated by a higher increase in VO2 max values post-intervention. Muscle biopsies revealed enhanced muscle fiber recruitment and adaptations in the HIIT group, suggesting improvements in muscle strength and endurance. Qualitative feedback from participants highlighted the positive experiences of HIIT, including increased motivation, energy levels, and overall well-being. The findings of this research contribute to the existing body of literature on the benefits of HIIT on cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle adaptations in young adults. The implications of implementing HIIT as a training modality for improving overall health and fitness levels are significant, particularly for individuals seeking time-efficient exercise options. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects of HIIT on various populations and to optimize training protocols for maximal benefits. Keywords High-Intensity Interval Training, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Muscle Adaptations, Young Adults, VO2 max, Mixed-Methods Research.
