Project Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of integrating sustainable farming practices into the agricultural science curriculum to enhance student engagement and environmental awareness among high school students in rural and urban settings. Recognizing the increasing importance of sustainability in modern agriculture, this research seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, thereby fostering a generation of environmentally conscious and practically skilled future farmers and educators. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data from students, teachers, and curriculum developers. A sample of 300 students from five secondary schools and 20 agricultural science teachers participated in the study, with data collection spanning one academic year. An intervention was implemented, where a module on sustainable farming practices—covering composting, crop rotation, integrated pest management, water conservation, agroforestry, and organic farming—was integrated into the existing curriculum. Pre- and post-intervention assessments measured student engagement levels, environmental knowledge, and attitude changes. The findings reveal a significant increase in student engagement, as evidenced by higher participation rates in practical activities and enthusiastic involvement during lessons. Additionally, there was a marked improvement in students’ understanding of sustainability concepts and a positive shift in their attitudes towards environmentally friendly farming. Teachers reported that the integration made lessons more relevant and sparked greater interest among students, leading to increased classroom participation and a deeper understanding of sustainable practices. The study further analyzes the challenges faced during implementation, including resource constraints, curriculum rigidity, and teachers’ capacity to deliver new content effectively. Recommendations emphasize the need for teacher training, resource allocation, and policy support to embed sustainability firmly into agricultural education. The research contributes valuable insights into curriculum development, pedagogical strategies, and the importance of experiential learning in promoting environmental stewardship among youth. Results suggest that curriculum integration not only enhances academic engagement but also builds practical skills critical for sustainable agricultural development. This approach aligns with national and global goals toward environmentally sustainable food production and climate resilience. The study underscores the potential of reformed agricultural science curricula to influence future agricultural practices positively and foster a generation of environmentally aware consumers and practitioners. Overall, this research advocates for systematic curriculum reform anchored in sustainable farming practices, thereby preparing students to meet the challenges of modern agriculture while promoting environmental conservation. The implications of these findings support policymakers, educational institutions, and curriculum developers in fostering innovative, sustainable, and engaging agricultural education that prepares students for real-world challenges and opportunities in agriculture and environmental stewardship.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

This project explores how teaching sustainable farming methods can be better included in agricultural science courses. It looks at ways to make students more interested in farming practices that are good for the environment and can be used in real life. The goal is to see if changing what is taught helps students learn more about sustainable farming and become more aware of environmental issues.

The Problem It Addresses

Many agricultural courses focus on traditional farming methods, but they often do not emphasize sustainability — ways of farming that protect the environment for future generations. This can lead to students not understanding or valuing environmentally friendly practices. The project aims to identify how integrating sustainability into the curriculum can improve student engagement and awareness, filling a gap between theory and real-world application.

Objectives of the Project

  1. To review current agricultural science curricula and identify gaps related to sustainable farming practices.
  2. To develop a plan for integrating sustainable farming topics into existing courses.
  3. To evaluate how this integration affects students’ interest and understanding of sustainable farming.
  4. To suggest effective teaching methods that encourage students to adopt sustainable practices.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Review existing agricultural science course materials and identify areas lacking information on sustainability.
  2. Develop new teaching content and methods that focus on sustainable farming practices.
  3. Implement the new curriculum in selected classes or groups of students.
  4. Collect data through surveys or questionnaires to see how students respond to the new content.
  5. Analyze the survey results to understand changes in students’ attitudes and knowledge about sustainability.
  6. Compare the findings from before and after the curriculum changes.
  7. Write a report of what worked well and what could be improved.
  8. Make recommendations for how other courses could also include sustainable farming practices.

Expected Outcome

The project aims to show that including sustainable farming practices in the curriculum increases students' interest in and understanding of environmentally friendly farming. It will also provide practical ideas for teachers on how to make their courses more relevant to real-world issues, encouraging students to become better future farmers and stewards of the environment.
