This study investigates how access to mobile-based market information affects crop price realization and household income among smallholder farmers. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research combines quantitative data from a panel survey of 600 smallholder households across three agro-ecological zones with qualitative insights from 30 in-depth interviews and 12 focus group discussions. Primary data were collected over two cropping seasons to capture seasonal price dynamics and information usage patterns, while secondary data from agricultural extension services, mobile information platforms, and market price databases complemented the analysis. The central premise is that timely, reliable market information can reduce information asymmetry, enable better price discovery, and improve bargaining power for smallholders in local, regional, and national markets. The study develops and tests a theoretical framework linking mobile-based information access to three core outcomes (i) price realization, defined as the difference between expected benchmark prices and actual realized prices at sale, accounting for transaction costs; (ii) income diversification and stability, through changes in crop mix, sale timing, and risk management strategies; and (iii) household welfare, including household expenditure, asset accumulation, and debt levels. Econometric models, including fixed-effects and instrumental variable approaches, are employed to establish causality while addressing endogeneity concerns such as farm size, access to credit, and literacy. Qualitative data are analyzed using thematic coding to elucidate mechanisms, user experiences, barriers to adoption, and the contextual factors that shape information effectiveness, such as trust in data sources, network reliability, and gender dynamics. Preliminary findings indicate that regular use of mobile market platforms correlates with a statistically significant improvement in price realization, reducing post-harvest price volatility by up to 18% in the peak season. The impact on household income is mediated by crop selection and timing of sales, with higher gains observed among farmers who diversify into higher-value but information-intensive markets. Barriers identified include limited smartphone penetration in remote areas, digital literacy gaps, language barriers, data costs, and concerns about data privacy. The study also reveals that information credibility and platform usability strongly influence adoption rates, with trusted local agents and user-friendly interfaces enhancing engagement. Policy implications emphasize the need for subsidized data costs, investment in rural connectivity, and capacity-building programs focused on digital literacy, negotiation skills, and crop-specific market analytics. The research contributes to the literature on digital inclusion in agriculture by providing robust evidence on the causal impact of mobile market information on smallholder income and by outlining a practical roadmap for scaling effective information services. Recommendations target policymakers, platform developers, financial institutions, and extension services to foster inclusive market information ecosystems that amplify smallholdersโ€™ bargaining power, reduce price dispersion, and promote sustainable income growth.
