Project Abstract

Protected cultivation using polyhouses has gained popularity among small and marginal farmers as it provides certain advantages over open field cultivation like higher yields, year-round production, and protection from climatic extremes. However, the cost of commercially available polyhouse structures remains high, restricting their adoption. This project aims to develop low-cost polyhouse designs using locally available and affordable materials. Various design options will be evaluated and the most suitable, low-cost structure will be fabricated. Its performance will be tested by taking a crop like tomato under protected conditions and comparing yields with open field. The study expects to demonstrate a polyhouse model that smallholders can adopt to boost incomes through off-season cultivation.
