Project Abstract

The Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) was established in 2001 by countries bordering the Gulf of Guinea to promote regional cooperation and development in various sectors such as security, trade, environment, and energy. This research project explores the role of the Gulf of Guinea Commission in contributing to national development in its member states. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data analysis to assess the impact of the GGC's initiatives on economic growth, security, and environmental sustainability within the region. The findings of the study indicate that the Gulf of Guinea Commission has played a significant role in fostering cooperation among member states, particularly in addressing maritime security challenges such as piracy and illegal fishing. By promoting information sharing, joint patrols, and capacity building initiatives, the GGC has contributed to a more secure maritime environment, which is essential for the sustainable development of the region's blue economy. Furthermore, the Commission has facilitated regional trade by harmonizing customs procedures, reducing trade barriers, and promoting infrastructural development along key transport corridors. In terms of energy cooperation, the Gulf of Guinea Commission has facilitated dialogue among member states to promote the development of the region's energy resources, including oil, gas, and renewable energy. By promoting joint ventures and resource-sharing agreements, the GGC has helped to maximize the economic benefits of energy production while also promoting sustainable practices to mitigate environmental impacts. Additionally, the Commission has supported initiatives to address environmental challenges such as oil spills, deforestation, and pollution through the implementation of regional frameworks and capacity building programs. Overall, this research demonstrates that the Gulf of Guinea Commission plays a crucial role in promoting regional cooperation and sustainable development in its member states. By addressing common challenges such as maritime security, trade facilitation, energy cooperation, and environmental sustainability, the GGC contributes to national development by creating an enabling environment for economic growth and social progress in the Gulf of Guinea region. The findings of this study have implications for policymakers, development practitioners, and scholars interested in regional integration and cooperation for sustainable development in Africa.
