Project Abstract

Public sector accounting in Nigeria is a critical aspect of the country's financial management system. This research examines the current state of public sector accounting in Nigeria, focusing on the challenges and opportunities for improvement. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The findings reveal several challenges facing public sector accounting in Nigeria, including inadequate infrastructure, outdated technology, lack of skilled personnel, and weak regulatory frameworks. These challenges have led to inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and limited accountability in the public sector. Moreover, the absence of standardized accounting practices across government agencies hinders transparency and comparability of financial information. Despite these challenges, the research also identifies opportunities for enhancing public sector accounting in Nigeria. These include the adoption of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), capacity building for accounting professionals, investment in information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, and strengthening regulatory oversight. By implementing these recommendations, the Nigerian government can improve financial reporting accuracy, enhance transparency and accountability, and ultimately achieve better governance outcomes. In conclusion, public sector accounting in Nigeria faces significant challenges that impede effective financial management and accountability. However, there are clear opportunities for improvement through the adoption of international standards, capacity building, technological investments, and regulatory reforms. Addressing these challenges and seizing the identified opportunities will be crucial for enhancing public sector accounting practices in Nigeria and promoting good governance in the country.
