Project Abstract
ABSTRACT The senior secondary school curriculum in Nigeria is comprehensive and covers a wide range of subjects aimed at providing students with a well-rounded education. However, not all topics are equally easy to teach or learn. This research project focuses on identifying the difficult teaching and learning topics within the senior secondary school curriculum in Nigeria. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by both teachers and students in tackling certain topics. The quantitative aspect involves surveying a large sample of teachers across various subject areas to rank topics based on difficulty level. The qualitative component includes in-depth interviews with teachers and students to gather insights into the specific reasons behind the perceived difficulty of these topics. Preliminary findings suggest that certain subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry contain topics that are consistently ranked as difficult by both teachers and students. Factors contributing to the difficulty of these topics include abstract concepts, insufficient instructional materials, lack of teacher training, and student disinterest. Furthermore, the research highlights the impact of the curriculum design and teaching methods on the perceived difficulty of certain topics. Identifying these difficult teaching and learning topics is crucial for curriculum developers, educators, and policymakers to address gaps in the current system and improve the overall quality of education in Nigeria. By pinpointing specific areas of challenge, targeted interventions can be developed to support teachers in effectively delivering these topics and to provide students with the necessary resources and support to overcome learning obstacles. The implications of this research extend beyond the classroom, as a better understanding of difficult topics can also inform future curriculum reforms and teacher training programs. By addressing these challenges, educators can enhance the learning experience for students and improve educational outcomes in senior secondary schools in Nigeria. This research serves as a valuable contribution to the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and effectiveness of education in the country.
