Project Abstract

The Nigerian banking sector has faced various challenges in recent years, with distress being a significant issue impacting the stability and confidence in the financial system. This research project aims to investigate the role of accountants and auditors in checking distress within the Nigerian banking sector. The study will explore the various factors contributing to distress in banks, such as poor governance, inadequate risk management practices, regulatory compliance issues, and economic instability. Through a comprehensive literature review, this research will examine the responsibilities and obligations of accountants and auditors in identifying and reporting distress in the banking sector. It will delve into the regulatory framework governing the banking industry in Nigeria, focusing on the requirements for financial reporting, auditing standards, and corporate governance practices. Furthermore, this study will analyze case studies of distressed banks in Nigeria to understand the warning signs and red flags that could have been identified earlier by accountants and auditors. By examining past instances of distress, the research aims to provide insights into how accounting and auditing practices can be improved to prevent and detect financial distress in banks more effectively. The research will also investigate the challenges faced by accountants and auditors in fulfilling their roles related to distress detection in the banking sector. Issues such as lack of independence, ethical dilemmas, inadequate expertise, and regulatory constraints will be explored to understand the barriers to effective distress checking. Additionally, the study will propose recommendations for enhancing the role of accountants and auditors in mitigating distress in the Nigerian banking sector. These recommendations may include improvements in regulatory oversight, enhancing professional training and development, promoting ethical standards, and fostering a culture of accountability within banks and auditing firms. Overall, this research project aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the role of accountants and auditors in checking distress in the Nigerian banking sector. By identifying challenges, proposing solutions, and highlighting best practices, the study seeks to enhance the effectiveness of financial reporting and auditing processes in safeguarding the stability and integrity of the banking system in Nigeria.
