Project Abstract
ABSTRACT The role of agricultural science teachers in secondary schools is crucial in equipping students with knowledge and skills in agriculture, a key sector for economic development in Kaduna State, Nigeria. This study aimed to investigate the challenges faced by agricultural science teachers in secondary schools in Kaduna State and their impact on students' learning outcomes. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, involving both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A total of 150 agricultural science teachers from different secondary schools in Kaduna State participated in the study. The quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire, while the qualitative data were gathered through interviews and focus group discussions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis to identify common themes and patterns. The findings revealed that agricultural science teachers in Kaduna State faced various challenges that hindered their effectiveness in the classroom. These challenges included inadequate training and professional development opportunities, lack of teaching resources and materials, large class sizes, and limited support from school administrators. Additionally, the teachers reported facing challenges related to students' lack of interest in agriculture, language barriers, and the perception of agriculture as a low-status subject. These challenges had a significant impact on students' learning outcomes in agricultural science. The teachers expressed concerns about students' poor performance in examinations, lack of practical skills, and limited understanding of key agricultural concepts. Furthermore, the teachers noted that the challenges they faced affected their motivation and job satisfaction, leading to burnout and reduced productivity. Based on the findings, several recommendations were made to address the challenges faced by agricultural science teachers in secondary schools in Kaduna State. These recommendations included providing more training and professional development opportunities for teachers, improving access to teaching resources and materials, reducing class sizes, and enhancing support from school administrators. Additionally, efforts should be made to increase students' interest in agriculture through practical and hands-on learning experiences. In conclusion, this study shed light on the challenges faced by agricultural science teachers in secondary schools in Kaduna State and their impact on students' learning outcomes. By addressing these challenges, stakeholders can work towards improving the quality of agricultural education in the state and ultimately contribute to the development of the agricultural sector.
