Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the relationship between oral health literacy and dental care utilization among a diverse population. Oral health literacy, defined as the degree to which individuals can obtain, process, and understand basic oral health information and services, is a crucial factor in promoting good oral health and accessing appropriate dental care. However, research on this topic remains limited, particularly in understanding the barriers and facilitators that influence the link between oral health literacy and dental care utilization. The importance of this project lies in the significant public health implications it holds. Poor oral health can have far-reaching consequences, affecting an individual's overall well-being, quality of life, and even general health. Untreated dental problems can lead to pain, infection, and in severe cases, life-threatening conditions. Understanding the role of oral health literacy in shaping dental care utilization patterns is essential for developing targeted interventions and policies to improve access to and engagement with dental services, particularly among underserved and marginalized populations. This project will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. The initial phase will involve a comprehensive review of the existing literature to synthesize current knowledge and identify research gaps. This will be followed by a cross-sectional survey to assess the oral health literacy levels and dental care utilization patterns of a diverse sample of participants. The survey will also explore the individual, social, and systemic factors that influence these variables. To provide a deeper understanding of the findings, the project will then incorporate qualitative interviews with a subset of participants. These interviews will delve into the personal experiences, perceptions, and decision-making processes that shape an individual's oral health literacy and dental care utilization. By incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data, the project aims to generate a holistic understanding of the complex relationship between these two critical aspects of oral health. The findings of this project will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on oral health literacy and its impact on dental care utilization. The insights gained from this research will inform the development of evidence-based strategies and interventions to improve oral health literacy and enhance access to and engagement with dental services. This, in turn, can lead to better oral health outcomes and reduce disparities in oral health, ultimately improving the overall well-being of individuals and communities.
