Project Abstract

Project Dental caries, a common chronic disease affecting children, poses a significant public health concern globally. The occlusal surfaces of molars are particularly vulnerable to caries development, making preventive measures crucial. Dental sealants, a widely recognized intervention, aim to create a physical barrier on these susceptible surfaces, preventing the accumulation of plaque and the subsequent formation of caries. This project aims to evaluate the efficacy of dental sealants in preventing occlusal caries in children, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of this preventive strategy. The importance of this project lies in the fact that tooth decay, if left untreated, can lead to pain, infection, and even tooth loss, negatively impacting a child's overall health, well-being, and quality of life. Moreover, the financial burden associated with the treatment of dental caries is substantial, highlighting the need for cost-effective and reliable preventive measures. By assessing the efficacy of dental sealants, this project can contribute to the development of evidence-based guidelines for their use, ultimately improving the oral health outcomes of children. The study will employ a longitudinal, prospective design, following a cohort of children aged 6-8 years over a period of 24 months. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a control group (without sealants) or an intervention group (with sealants applied on their occlusal surfaces). The primary outcome measure will be the incidence of occlusal caries, which will be assessed through comprehensive dental examinations conducted at baseline, 12 months, and 24 months. Secondary outcome measures will include the retention rate of the sealants, the development of caries on other tooth surfaces, and the children's oral hygiene practices and dietary habits. Additionally, the study will explore the potential factors influencing the efficacy of sealants, such as socioeconomic status, oral health knowledge, and access to dental care. The data collected will be analyzed using appropriate statistical methods, including survival analysis and multilevel modeling, to determine the effectiveness of dental sealants in preventing occlusal caries. The results will be compared to existing literature, and potential confounding factors will be addressed to ensure the validity and generalizability of the findings. The findings of this project will have significant implications for dental public health policies and practices. If dental sealants demonstrate a high level of efficacy in preventing occlusal caries, it will strengthen the case for their widespread adoption as a cost-effective and evidence-based preventive strategy. Furthermore, the insights gained from this study can inform educational campaigns and targeted interventions aimed at promoting the use of dental sealants among children and their families. In conclusion, this project's evaluation of the efficacy of dental sealants in preventing occlusal caries in children is a critical step in addressing a pressing public health issue. By providing robust evidence on the effectiveness of this preventive measure, the project has the potential to contribute to the improvement of oral health outcomes and the reduction of the burden associated with dental caries in children.
