Project Abstract

Chronic periodontitis is a widespread and debilitating oral health condition that affects a significant portion of the global population. This progressive disease, characterized by the destruction of the supporting tissues surrounding the teeth, can lead to tooth loss and a range of systemic health complications if left untreated. Traditional periodontal therapies, such as scaling and root planing, have long been the standard of care. However, the emergence of laser-assisted periodontal therapy (LAPT) has introduced a novel and potentially more effective approach to managing this condition. This project aims to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of LAPT in the treatment of chronic periodontitis, providing crucial insights that could shape the future of periodontal care. By conducting a comprehensive literature review and a systematic analysis of clinical data, the study will assess the impact of LAPT on various clinical parameters, including pocket depth reduction, clinical attachment level gain, and gingival inflammation. Additionally, the project will investigate the long-term stability of the treatment outcomes and the potential advantages of LAPT over conventional therapies. The significance of this project lies in its potential to address the limitations of traditional periodontal treatments and improve the overall management of chronic periodontitis. LAPT, with its ability to selectively target diseased tissues and promote tissue regeneration, has shown promising results in preliminary studies. However, a thorough evaluation of its efficacy in comparison to established therapies is necessary to establish its clinical utility and guide the decision-making process for healthcare professionals and patients. The research methodology will involve a systematic review of the existing literature, followed by a meta-analysis of relevant clinical studies. The project will also include a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial that will directly compare the outcomes of LAPT and conventional scaling and root planing in patients with chronic periodontitis. The trial will be designed to assess the primary outcome measures of pocket depth reduction and clinical attachment level gain, as well as secondary outcomes such as gingival inflammation, bleeding on probing, and patient-reported satisfaction. The anticipated outcomes of this project include a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of LAPT in the management of chronic periodontitis, as well as the identification of any potential limitations or adverse effects associated with the treatment. The results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at international conferences, ensuring that the findings contribute to the advancement of periodontal care and inform clinical decision-making.
