Project Abstract

This project aims to assess the effectiveness of dental sealants in preventing the development of dental caries in pediatric patients. Dental caries, a common oral health issue, particularly affects children and adolescents, and can lead to significant long-term consequences if left untreated. Dental sealants, a preventive measure that involves the application of a thin, protective coating on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, have been widely used as a strategy to reduce the risk of caries in this population. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of dental sealants in preventing the occurrence of dental caries in pediatric patients over a specific period, typically ranging from one to three years. The study will be conducted in a controlled clinical setting, with participants randomly assigned to either a sealant group or a control group. The sealant group will receive the application of dental sealants on their chewing surfaces, while the control group will not undergo any sealant treatment. The study will employ a combination of clinical examinations, dental imaging, and patient-reported measures to assess the incidence of caries in both groups. Clinical examinations will be performed at regular intervals, during which the presence and severity of dental caries will be recorded. Dental imaging, such as X-rays or digital photographs, will be used to supplement the clinical assessment and provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the dental health status of the participants. In addition to the clinical outcomes, the study will also evaluate the impact of dental sealants on the overall quality of life and oral health-related behaviors of the pediatric patients. This will be assessed through the use of validated questionnaires and surveys, which will gather information on factors such as pain, discomfort, and the level of confidence in maintaining good oral hygiene practices. The findings of this project are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the efficacy of dental sealants in preventing caries in pediatric patients. The results will provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public, informing decision-making processes related to the implementation and promotion of preventive dental care strategies for children and adolescents. The study will be designed and conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards, ensuring the protection of the participants' rights and well-being. The research protocol will be reviewed and approved by an independent ethics committee, and informed consent will be obtained from the parents or legal guardians of the participating children. In conclusion, this project aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of dental sealants in preventing dental caries in pediatric patients. The findings of this study will contribute to the development of evidence-based guidelines and policies that promote the use of preventive dental care interventions, ultimately improving the oral health and overall well-being of children and adolescents.
