Abstract
This research examines the impact of body-worn cameras (BWCs) on police-community relations from a criminological perspective. The use of BWCs by law enforcement agencies has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, with the aim of enhancing transparency, accountability, and trust between police officers and the community they serve. This study seeks to explore the effects of BWCs on various aspects of police-community interactions, including officer behavior, citizen perceptions, trust-building, accountability, and the overall dynamics of law enforcement practices. The research methodology employed in this study includes a comprehensive review of existing literature on BWCs and their impact on police-community relations. Ten key themes emerged from the literature review, providing a nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between BWCs and various stakeholders in the criminal justice system. The research methodology also involves the collection and analysis of primary data through interviews with police officers, community members, and experts in the field of criminology. The findings of this research reveal both positive and negative impacts of BWCs on police-community relations. While BWCs have been shown to improve accountability, reduce the use of force by officers, and enhance trust between police and community members, concerns have also been raised regarding privacy rights, data management, and the potential for unintended consequences such as increased surveillance and distrust. The discussion of findings in Chapter Four delves into these complexities, providing a detailed analysis of the implications of BWCs for police-community interactions. In conclusion, this study highlights the multifaceted nature of the impact of BWCs on police-community relations and underscores the need for a balanced and evidence-based approach to the deployment of this technology. The implications of the findings are discussed in the context of policy recommendations aimed at maximizing the benefits of BWCs while mitigating potential drawbacks. By shedding light on the complexities of this issue, this research contributes to the ongoing dialogue surrounding the use of technology in law enforcement and its implications for community trust and public safety.
