Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the complex relationship between socioeconomic factors and criminal recidivism, which is the tendency of an individual to relapse into criminal behavior after being released from incarceration. Understanding the underlying drivers of recidivism is crucial for developing effective rehabilitation and reintegration programs, as well as informing policy decisions that address the root causes of criminal behavior. Recidivism is a persistent challenge faced by criminal justice systems worldwide, with high rates of repeat offenses leading to a cycle of incarceration, release, and re-offending. Existing research has identified numerous factors that contribute to this phenomenon, including individual characteristics, mental health, substance abuse, and the availability of support systems. However, the role of socioeconomic factors, such as poverty, employment, education, and access to social services, has received less attention, despite their potential to significantly influence an individual's propensity for recidivism. This project aims to fill this gap by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the impact of socioeconomic factors on criminal recidivism. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the study will examine the relationship between various socioeconomic indicators and the likelihood of an individual re-offending after release from incarceration. The research will involve the collection and analysis of data from multiple sources, including criminal justice records, census data, and interviews with formerly incarcerated individuals and service providers. The findings of this project will contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between socioeconomic status and criminal behavior. By identifying the specific socioeconomic factors that most significantly influence recidivism, the study will provide valuable insights for policymakers, criminal justice professionals, and social service providers.
