Abstract
Bribery and corruption have been pervasive issues in Nigerian society, deeply rooted in its sociological fabric. This research delves into the sociology of bribery and corruption in Nigeria, aiming to understand the intricate social dynamics that perpetuate these practices. By employing a qualitative research approach, this study examines the various social structures, norms, and values that contribute to the widespread acceptance and prevalence of bribery and corruption in the country. The research findings reveal that bribery and corruption in Nigeria are not just individual acts but are deeply embedded in social interactions, institutions, and power dynamics. Sociological theories such as social exchange theory, strain theory, and conflict theory are used to analyze the underlying mechanisms that drive individuals to engage in corrupt practices. The study also uncovers the role of social networks, kinship ties, and patron-client relationships in facilitating bribery and corruption, highlighting how these social connections create a culture of impunity and favoritism. Furthermore, the research explores the impact of bribery and corruption on various aspects of Nigerian society, including its economy, politics, and social cohesion. It reveals how corruption distorts economic activities, undermines public trust in institutions, and exacerbates social inequalities. The study also investigates the ways in which corruption perpetuates a cycle of poverty and marginalization, particularly affecting vulnerable groups and hindering socio-economic development. Moreover, the research examines the strategies and initiatives aimed at combating bribery and corruption in Nigeria from a sociological perspective. It discusses the role of civil society organizations, media, and international interventions in addressing corruption and promoting transparency and accountability. The study highlights the importance of changing social norms and values, strengthening institutional frameworks, and promoting ethical leadership to effectively tackle bribery and corruption in Nigerian society. In conclusion, this research contributes to the understanding of the sociology of bribery and corruption in Nigeria by shedding light on the complex social dynamics that drive these practices.
