Project Abstract

Abstract
The issue of awaiting trial persons in Nigeria has been a significant challenge within the criminal justice system. This research focuses on examining the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Justice in addressing this problem. The study utilizes a qualitative research approach, incorporating document analysis and interviews with key stakeholders in the justice system. The findings reveal that the Federal Ministry of Justice has implemented various initiatives to reduce the number of awaiting trial persons in Nigeria. These initiatives include the establishment of special courts, the review of case files, and the provision of legal aid to indigent defendants. Despite these efforts, challenges such as case backlog, insufficient resources, and delays in the judicial process persist. The research underscores the importance of continued collaboration among key stakeholders, including the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, legal aid providers, and civil society organizations, to address the issue of awaiting trial persons effectively. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for sustained funding, capacity building, and improved coordination to enhance the efficiency and fairness of the criminal justice system in Nigeria. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into the initiatives undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Justice to address the problem of awaiting trial persons in Nigeria. The findings offer valuable implications for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers seeking to improve the administration of justice and uphold the rights of individuals in pretrial detention.
