Abstract
Police torture and deaths in custody in Nigeria are critical human rights issues that require urgent attention and intervention. This research aims to investigate the prevalence, causes, and consequences of police torture and deaths in custody in Nigeria. The study will examine the legal framework surrounding police conduct and accountability in Nigeria, as well as the existing mechanisms for monitoring and addressing cases of police torture and deaths in custody. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, official reports, and case studies, this research will analyze the root causes of police torture and deaths in custody in Nigeria, including systemic issues such as corruption, lack of training, and impunity within the police force. The study will also explore the impact of these human rights violations on victims, their families, and society as a whole. Furthermore, this research will investigate the responses of the Nigerian government, civil society organizations, and the international community to cases of police torture and deaths in custody. By examining past interventions and advocacy efforts, the study aims to identify gaps in the current response mechanisms and propose recommendations for more effective prevention and redress of these human rights violations.
