This research project delves into the emergence and role of the police in colonial Nigeria, specifically focusing on the imperial policing practices that were implemented during the colonial era. The study seeks to explore how the police force was established and evolved within the colonial context, examining the influences, structures, and functions that shaped its development. By analyzing historical records, archival materials, and scholarly works, this research aims to provide insights into the establishment of the police force in Nigeria by the British colonial administration and its impact on the local population. The research will investigate the reasons behind the introduction of the police force in colonial Nigeria, considering factors such as maintaining law and order, protecting colonial interests, and enforcing colonial policies. It will explore how the police force was structured, organized, and operated in the colonial context, highlighting the roles and responsibilities assigned to the police in maintaining imperial control and authority. Additionally, the study will examine the recruitment, training, and deployment of police officers, as well as their interactions with the local population.
