Abstract
The credibility of pump meters in filling stations is a critical issue in the petroleum industry as it directly impacts consumers' trust in the accuracy of fuel dispensation. This study focuses on investigating the credibility of pump meters at NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) filling stations. The research employs a case study approach to explore the accuracy and reliability of pump meters in ensuring that customers receive the correct amount of fuel for their payment. The methodology involves both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data is obtained through the measurement of fuel dispensed by pump meters compared to the amount paid by customers. This data is analyzed to determine the level of accuracy in fuel dispensation. Qualitative data is gathered through interviews with station attendants and managers to understand the operational procedures and maintenance practices related to pump meters at NNPC filling stations. The findings of the study reveal the presence of discrepancies in the accuracy of pump meters at NNPC filling stations. While some meters dispense fuel accurately within acceptable margins, others exhibit deviations that result in customers receiving less fuel than they paid for. Factors such as improper calibration, wear and tear of components, and lack of regular maintenance contribute to these discrepancies. The implications of inaccurate pump meters go beyond financial losses for customers; they also erode trust in the NNPC brand and the petroleum industry as a whole. Customers who feel they are being short-changed may choose to patronize other filling stations, leading to revenue loss for NNPC. Moreover, the reputation of NNPC as a reliable fuel provider is at risk if pump meter credibility issues persist. Based on the research findings, recommendations are proposed to improve the credibility of pump meters at NNPC filling stations. These include regular calibration checks, maintenance schedules, staff training on meter accuracy, and implementing quality control measures to ensure compliance with standards. By addressing these recommendations, NNPC can enhance customer satisfaction, rebuild trust, and uphold its reputation as a reputable fuel provider in Nigeria.
