Abstract
The aim of this research was to investigate the nutritional status, dietary patterns, and prevalence of chronic diseases among adults in Bida Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study was conducted, involving a sample of 500 adults aged 18 years and above. Anthropometric measurements, including height, weight, and waist circumference, were taken to assess the nutritional status of the participants. Dietary patterns were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire, and the prevalence of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity was determined through self-reported diagnoses and medical records review. The findings revealed a high prevalence of overweight and obesity among the adults in Bida Local Government Area, with a significant proportion of the population falling into the overweight and obese categories based on their body mass index. The dietary patterns of the participants indicated a high consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods, such as rice and bread, with low intake of fruits and vegetables. This imbalanced dietary pattern is associated with the high prevalence of chronic diseases observed in the study population. The prevalence of hypertension was found to be particularly high among the adults in Bida, with a significant number of participants reporting a previous diagnosis of high blood pressure. Diabetes mellitus was also prevalent in the population, highlighting the need for improved access to healthcare services and awareness programs focusing on lifestyle modifications. Furthermore, the study identified a correlation between obesity and the prevalence of chronic diseases, emphasizing the importance of addressing the underlying nutritional factors contributing to these health conditions. In conclusion, the research provides valuable insights into the nutritional status, dietary patterns, and prevalence of chronic diseases among adults in Bida Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria. The findings underscore the urgent need for interventions aimed at promoting healthy eating habits, increasing awareness about the risks of chronic diseases, and enhancing healthcare services to address the burden of non-communicable diseases in the community. By implementing targeted strategies to improve nutrition and lifestyle choices, stakeholders can work towards reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases and improving the overall health outcomes of the adult population in Bida and similar settings.
