Project Abstract

Abstract
Senna alata, commonly known as candle bush or Emperor's candlesticks, is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine for its various therapeutic properties. This study aimed to screen the leaves of Senna alata for their biochemical composition and hypoglycemic activity. The leaves of Senna alata were collected, dried, and subjected to extraction using different solvents to obtain the crude extracts. The biochemical composition of the extracts was analyzed to identify the presence of various phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and glycosides. The hypoglycemic activity of the extracts was evaluated using in vitro and in vivo models. The results of the biochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and glycosides in the extracts of Senna alata leaves. These phytochemicals are known for their potential pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycemic properties. The hypoglycemic activity of the extracts was assessed using in vitro assays to determine their effect on glucose uptake and utilization by cells. The results indicated that the extracts of Senna alata leaves significantly enhanced glucose uptake in the cells, suggesting their potential as hypoglycemic agents. Furthermore, in vivo studies were conducted using animal models of diabetes to evaluate the hypoglycemic effect of the extracts. The administration of the extracts resulted in a significant reduction in blood glucose levels in diabetic animals compared to the control group. These findings support the traditional use of Senna alata in the management of diabetes and provide scientific evidence for its hypoglycemic activity. In conclusion, the screening of Senna alata leaves for biochemical composition and hypoglycemic activity demonstrated the presence of bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic benefits. The results suggest that Senna alata could be a valuable source of natural remedies for managing diabetes and related metabolic disorders. Further studies are warranted to isolate and identify the active compounds responsible for the observed effects and elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action.
