Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Ocimum gratissimum, commonly known as scent leaf, is a medicinal plant with various traditional uses due to its pharmacological properties. In this study, the phytochemical constituents of the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum were investigated. The plant material was collected, dried, ground, and subjected to extraction using methanol as the solvent. The resulting methanolic extract was then analyzed for its phytochemical composition. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum revealed the presence of several bioactive compounds including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and phenolic compounds. Alkaloids are known for their diverse biological activities, including antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, while tannins have been reported to exhibit antimicrobial and antiviral activities. Saponins are known for their cholesterol-lowering effects and potential anticancer properties. Phenolic compounds, on the other hand, have antioxidant properties and may contribute to the plant's overall therapeutic potential. Further analysis of the methanolic extract using advanced techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) could provide a more detailed profile of the specific phytochemical constituents present in Ocimum gratissimum. Identifying and quantifying these compounds can offer valuable insights into the plant's medicinal properties and potential health benefits. The phytochemical constituents of Ocimum gratissimum have been reported to exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Understanding the chemical composition of the methanolic extract of this plant can help elucidate the mechanisms underlying these pharmacological properties. Additionally, the phytochemical analysis of Ocimum gratissimum may lead to the discovery of novel bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum contains a diverse array of phytochemical constituents with potential medicinal properties.
