Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Senna alata, commonly known as "candle bush" or "emperor's candlesticks," is a tropical plant that has been traditionally used in various cultures for its medicinal properties. This study aimed to investigate the biochemical composition of Senna alata leaves and evaluate their potential hypoglycemic activity. The leaves of Senna alata were collected, dried, and subjected to extraction using different solvents to obtain various fractions. Qualitative phytochemical analysis was performed to determine the presence of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and glycosides. Additionally, quantitative analysis was conducted to measure the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the leaf extracts. The hypoglycemic activity of the Senna alata leaf extracts was assessed using in vitro assays with glucose oxidase and ?-amylase enzymes. The results demonstrated significant inhibitory effects on both glucose oxidase and ?-amylase activities, indicating the potential of Senna alata leaves to lower blood glucose levels. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of the leaf extracts was evaluated using DPPH radical scavenging assay. The results revealed strong antioxidant properties, suggesting that Senna alata leaves may help reduce oxidative stress and prevent complications associated with diabetes. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the biochemical composition and hypoglycemic potential of Senna alata leaves. The presence of various bioactive compounds and their inhibitory effects on key enzymes involved in glucose metabolism indicate the plant's therapeutic potential in managing diabetes. Moreover, the antioxidant properties of the leaf extracts highlight their possible role in mitigating oxidative damage associated with diabetes. Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action, conduct in vivo studies to validate the hypoglycemic effects, and explore the development of Senna alata-based formulations for diabetes management. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the traditional use of Senna alata as a medicinal plant and underscores its potential as a natural source of hypoglycemic agents with antioxidant properties.
