Abstract
Gentrification, a phenomenon characterized by the transformation of neighborhoods through the influx of wealthier residents and the displacement of existing low-income populations, has become a pressing issue in urban areas worldwide. This research project aims to assess the impact of gentrification on affordable housing in urban areas, focusing on understanding the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon and its implications for housing affordability and social equity. The study begins with an exploration of the historical background of gentrification and its evolution over time, highlighting the key drivers and mechanisms that facilitate the process. By examining the relationship between gentrification and affordable housing, the research seeks to identify the challenges faced by low-income residents in accessing and maintaining affordable housing in rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods. Through a comprehensive literature review, the project will analyze existing studies and theoretical frameworks to provide a holistic understanding of the complexities surrounding gentrification and affordable housing. In the methodology section, a mixed-methods approach will be employed to gather data from both quantitative and qualitative sources. Surveys, interviews, and case studies will be utilized to capture the perspectives of diverse stakeholders, including residents, policymakers, developers, and community organizations. By triangulating data from multiple sources, the research aims to uncover the multifaceted impacts of gentrification on affordable housing and to explore potential strategies for mitigating its negative effects.
