Project Abstract

Abstract
Urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon characterized by higher temperatures in urban areas compared to their rural surroundings. This temperature differential is primarily caused by human activities, such as heat generation from buildings, vehicles, and industrial processes, as well as the lack of vegetation and green spaces in urban environments. Green infrastructure, which includes initiatives like green roofs, parks, and urban forests, has been identified as a potential solution to mitigate the UHI effect and improve urban climate resilience. This research project aims to analyze the impact of green infrastructure on the UHI effect in a rapidly growing city. The study begins with a comprehensive review of existing literature on urban heat islands, green infrastructure, and their interplay. The literature review explores the various types of green infrastructure interventions that have been implemented in urban areas worldwide and their effectiveness in reducing the UHI effect. Additionally, it examines the methodologies used in previous studies to evaluate the impact of green infrastructure on urban microclimates. In the research methodology section, a mixed-methods approach is proposed to investigate the relationship between green infrastructure and the UHI effect. This includes the collection of temperature data from different locations within the study area, as well as conducting surveys and interviews with city planners, residents, and other stakeholders to gather insights on the perceived benefits and challenges of green infrastructure implementation. The findings from the study are discussed in detail in the fourth chapter, which includes a thorough analysis of the temperature data collected, as well as the feedback obtained from the surveys and interviews. The results provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of green infrastructure in mitigating the UHI effect and improving thermal comfort in urban areas. Furthermore, the discussion highlights the key factors that influence the success of green infrastructure initiatives and the barriers to their widespread adoption. In conclusion, this research project emphasizes the importance of incorporating green infrastructure into urban planning and design to address the challenges posed by the UHI effect. The study underscores the significant role that green spaces and vegetation play in enhancing the environmental quality and livability of cities, particularly in the context of rapid urbanization and climate change. By understanding the impact of green infrastructure on the UHI effect, policymakers and urban planners can make informed decisions to create more sustainable and resilient cities for the future.
