Project Abstract

This project seeks to investigate the potential of immersive theatre as a powerful tool for fostering meaningful community engagement. In an age where social connectedness and civic participation are increasingly vital, yet often challenging to cultivate, this study aims to uncover the unique benefits that immersive theatrical experiences can offer in bridging gaps and strengthening the bonds within local communities. Immersive theatre, a genre that immerses audience members directly into the performance, has gained significant traction in recent years, capturing the imagination of artists, audiences, and researchers alike. By blurring the boundaries between performers and spectators, these productions have the capacity to create deeper emotional resonance, foster empathy, and encourage active participation from the community. This project hypothesizes that the immersive nature of these theatrical experiences can serve as a powerful catalyst for enhancing community engagement, leading to increased social cohesion, civic involvement, and a greater sense of belonging among participants. Through a comprehensive investigation, this project will explore the multifaceted impacts of immersive theatre on community engagement. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques to gain a holistic understanding of the phenomenon. Ethnographic observations, in-depth interviews with both audience members and theatre practitioners, and surveys measuring community-related outcomes will be utilized to provide a rich and nuanced perspective on the topic. The research will delve into the various ways in which immersive theatre can foster community engagement.
