Project Abstract

This project is of paramount importance in addressing the pressing challenges of food security and environmental sustainability. With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, the need for enhanced agricultural productivity has become increasingly critical. However, the conventional agricultural practices, characterized by intensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, have often led to soil degradation, water pollution, and a decline in ecosystem services. The development of sustainable soil management practices is, therefore, essential to ensure long-term food production while mitigating the adverse environmental impacts of agriculture. The primary objective of this project is to develop and implement a comprehensive framework for sustainable soil management that can significantly improve crop productivity in a manner that is ecologically and economically viable. The project will focus on three key areas (1) assessment of soil health and nutrient status, (2) optimization of organic and inorganic soil amendments, and (3) integration of precision farming techniques. The assessment of soil health and nutrient status will involve detailed analysis of soil physical, chemical, and biological properties across various agricultural regions. This will provide a detailed understanding of the current state of the soil and guide the development of tailored soil management strategies. The project will then explore the potential of organic soil amendments, such as compost, biochar, and green manures, to enhance soil fertility, improve water-holding capacity, and promote beneficial soil biota. The integration of these organic inputs with judiciously applied inorganic fertilizers will be investigated to achieve optimal nutrient management and minimize environmental impacts. Furthermore, the project will integrate precision farming techniques, including remote sensing, GPS-guided equipment, and data-driven decision support systems, to enable site-specific and precision-based soil management. This approach will help farmers optimize the application of inputs, reduce wastage, and improve the overall efficiency of agricultural practices. The project will employ a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together experts from the fields of soil science, agronomy, environmental engineering, and agricultural economics. The research team will collaborate with local farmers, agricultural extension services, and policymakers to ensure the relevance and widespread adoption of the developed soil management practices. Through a combination of field trials, laboratory analyses, and economic assessments, the project will generate a comprehensive set of evidence-based recommendations for sustainable soil management. These recommendations will be disseminated through targeted training programs, farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange, and the development of user-friendly decision support tools. The successful implementation of this project will have far-reaching implications, contributing to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Climate Action (SDG 13). By enhancing crop productivity while safeguarding the environment, this project will pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system, ultimately benefiting both farmers and consumers alike.
