Project Abstract

This project aims to address the growing environmental concerns associated with conventional petroleum-based plastic packaging by developing innovative biodegradable polymer materials. The global plastic waste crisis has become a significant challenge, with millions of tons of non-biodegradable plastic ending up in landfills, oceans, and other natural environments, causing irreversible harm to ecosystems and human health. Conventional plastic packaging is often resistant to degradation, leading to persistent plastic pollution that can take hundreds of years to decompose. To address this critical issue, this project focuses on the synthesis and characterization of novel biodegradable polymers that can serve as sustainable alternatives for packaging applications. Biodegradable polymers are materials that can be broken down by natural processes, such as the action of microorganisms, enzymes, or environmental factors, into simpler, non-toxic compounds. These biodegradable materials have the potential to minimize the environmental impact of plastic waste by enabling a circular economy, where products can be recycled or composted at the end of their life cycle. The primary objective of this project is to design and synthesize a range of biodegradable polymer compositions using renewable and eco-friendly precursors. This will involve exploring various biobased monomers, such as those derived from agricultural waste, natural oils, or microbial fermentation, and developing efficient polymerization techniques to create novel polymer structures. The focus will be on tailoring the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of these biodegradable polymers to match or exceed the performance of conventional plastic packaging materials. A comprehensive characterization of the synthesized polymers will be conducted to assess their suitability for packaging applications. This will include evaluating their thermal stability, mechanical strength, barrier properties, biodegradability, and compliance with relevant food contact and safety regulations. Advanced analytical techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermal analysis, will be employed to gain a thorough understanding of the polymer structures and their degradation pathways. In addition to the polymer synthesis and characterization, this project will also explore the potential applications of these novel biodegradable polymers in the packaging industry. This will involve developing prototype packaging materials, such as films, containers, or coatings, and evaluating their performance under real-world conditions. The project team will collaborate with industry partners to ensure the developed solutions align with market needs and can be seamlessly integrated into existing packaging supply chains. The successful completion of this project will contribute to the development of sustainable packaging solutions that can reduce the environmental burden of plastic waste. By providing biodegradable polymer alternatives, this project aims to support the transition towards a more circular and eco-friendly economy, promoting the adoption of renewable and recyclable materials in the packaging industry. The findings of this research will also advance the scientific understanding of biobased polymer design and open new avenues for further innovations in the field of sustainable materials.
