Abstract
Co-operative societies have played a significant role in the socio-economic development of Nigeria, particularly in providing financial services and support to members. This research project focuses on the origin and development of co-operative societies in Nigeria, with a specific case study of the IMT Multipurpose Co-operative Society in Enugu. The study aims to explore the historical background of co-operative societies in Nigeria, tracing their evolution from traditional communal practices to formalized structures. Using a case study approach, the research examines the establishment and growth of the IMT Multipurpose Co-operative Society, highlighting its key milestones, challenges, and successes. Through a combination of primary and secondary data sources, including interviews, surveys, and literature reviews, the study provides insights into the factors that have influenced the formation and operation of co-operative societies in Nigeria. The findings reveal that co-operative societies in Nigeria have evolved over time, adapting to changing socio-economic conditions and government policies. The IMT Multipurpose Co-operative Society, in particular, has played a significant role in supporting its members through various initiatives, including savings and credit programs, agricultural projects, and social welfare activities. The society has also faced challenges such as limited access to funding, bureaucratic hurdles, and internal management issues, which have impacted its overall effectiveness. Overall, the research project contributes to a better understanding of the origin and development of co-operative societies in Nigeria, shedding light on their historical significance and contemporary relevance. During the colonial days the seed of co operation was sown but it could only grow slowly. At this points, co operative were restricted to serve only the purpose of the paymaster (the white man)
