Project Abstract

This project aims to address the critical challenge of enhancing citizen engagement in local government decision-making processes. Effective citizen participation is essential for ensuring that the decisions made by local authorities truly reflect the needs and priorities of the communities they serve. However, many municipalities struggle to foster meaningful and sustained engagement, often resulting in a disconnect between citizens and their elected representatives. The primary goal of this project is to develop and implement innovative strategies that will increase the level and quality of citizen involvement in local government decision-making. By empowering citizens to actively contribute to the decision-making process, this project will help to bridge the gap between the public and their local government, leading to more informed, transparent, and responsive decision-making. The project will take a multi-pronged approach, drawing on best practices and successful models from other jurisdictions, as well as incorporating input from local stakeholders. Key components of the project will include 1. Comprehensive stakeholder engagement The project will begin with a thorough assessment of the current state of citizen engagement in the target municipality. This will involve conducting focus groups, surveys, and interviews with a diverse range of community members, including underrepresented groups, to understand their perceptions, barriers to participation, and desired modes of engagement. 2. Innovative engagement strategies Based on the insights gathered, the project will design and pilot a suite of new engagement strategies that cater to the needs and preferences of the local community. These may include the use of digital platforms, participatory budgeting, citizen assemblies, and targeted outreach campaigns to engage citizens in the decision-making process. 3.
