Project Abstract

This project aims to critically analyze the effectiveness of United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations in resolving international conflicts and promoting sustainable peace. The UN has a long history of deploying peacekeeping forces to regions plagued by armed violence, with the goal of maintaining ceasefire agreements, protecting civilians, and facilitating political transitions. However, the success of these operations has been a subject of ongoing debate, with concerns raised about their ability to achieve lasting conflict resolution. The project will begin by reviewing the evolving role and mandate of UN peacekeeping operations, from their inception in the 1940s to the present day. It will examine the core principles and strategies underpinning these missions, such as impartiality, consent of the parties, and the use of force only in self-defense. The analysis will then delve into several case studies of UN peacekeeping operations, both successful and unsuccessful, to identify the key factors that contribute to their effectiveness in resolving conflicts. One of the primary objectives of the project is to assess the ability of UN peacekeeping operations to address the root causes of conflicts, rather than merely containing the symptoms. This will involve a critical examination of the political, economic, and social dynamics that underlie the outbreak and perpetuation of violence in various regional contexts. The project will also explore the challenges faced by peacekeeping missions in navigating complex geopolitical landscapes, including the competing interests of member states and the potential for external interference. Furthermore, the project will investigate the evolving nature of modern conflicts, which are increasingly characterized by asymmetric warfare, the involvement of non-state actors, and the proliferation of transnational security threats, such as terrorism and organized crime. It will assess the capacity of UN peacekeeping operations to adapt and respond to these emerging challenges, and the extent to which they can effectively coordinate with other international organizations and regional mechanisms to enhance their operational effectiveness. The project will also delve into the issues of civilian protection, human rights, and the promotion of sustainable peace in the aftermath of conflicts. It will examine the role of UN peacekeeping missions in supporting the implementation of peace agreements, facilitating the disarmament and demobilization of armed groups, and assisting in the rebuilding of political, economic, and social institutions. By conducting a comprehensive and evidence-based evaluation of UN peacekeeping operations, this project aims to contribute to the ongoing debate on the efficacy of these missions and provide policymakers and practitioners with valuable insights and recommendations for enhancing the UN's ability to resolve international conflicts and promote lasting peace. The findings of this study will be disseminated through academic publications, policy briefs, and stakeholder engagements, with the goal of informing and shaping the future direction of UN peacekeeping operations.
