The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked profound ethical debates regarding the potential moral agency of machines. This research project delves into the complex intersection of philosophy and technology by investigating the fundamental question Can machines possess moral agency? Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, philosophical theories, and ethical frameworks, this study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the ethical implications surrounding AI development and deployment. The research begins with an exploration of the historical background of AI and the evolution of machine intelligence, contextualizing the current discourse on AI ethics. By examining key philosophical concepts and ethical theories, the project seeks to delineate the theoretical foundations for evaluating the moral agency of machines. The problem statement highlights the ethical dilemmas arising from the increasing autonomy and decision-making capabilities of AI systems, raising concerns about accountability, transparency, and the potential impact on human society. The objectives of this study are twofold first, to critically assess the ethical dimensions of AI technology and its implications for moral agency; and second, to propose ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks to address the ethical challenges posed by the growing influence of AI in various sectors. While acknowledging the limitations inherent in this research, such as the evolving nature of AI technology and the complexity of moral reasoning in non-human entities, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the ethical considerations surrounding AI development. The scope of this research encompasses a multidisciplinary approach, integrating perspectives from philosophy, computer science, ethics, and law to offer a comprehensive analysis of the ethical implications of AI. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the general public about the ethical dilemmas posed by AI technology and the need for ethical governance in the development and deployment of intelligent systems. The structure of the research is organized into five main chapters. Chapter 1 provides the introduction, background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and structure of the research. Chapter 2 presents a thorough literature review, synthesizing key insights from existing scholarship on AI ethics and moral agency. Chapter 3 outlines the research methodology, including data collection methods, theoretical frameworks, and ethical considerations. Chapter 4 presents the findings of the study, analyzing the ethical implications of AI technology on moral agency and proposing recommendations for ethical governance. The discussion covers topics such as machine autonomy, algorithmic bias, accountability, and the ethical challenges posed by AI decision-making systems. Finally, Chapter 5 offers a conclusion and summary of the research, highlighting the key findings, implications, and recommendations for future research and policy development in the field of AI ethics. Overall, this research project aims to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on AI ethics and moral agency, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations in the design and implementation of intelligent systems.
