Abstract
This research project aims to investigate the potential drug-drug interactions between commonly prescribed medications in a geriatric population. The geriatric population is particularly vulnerable to adverse drug reactions due to physiological changes associated with aging, multiple comorbidities, and the concurrent use of multiple medications. Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) can result in decreased efficacy, increased toxicity, or new adverse effects, posing significant risks to the health and well-being of older adults. The study will begin with a comprehensive review of the literature to identify the most commonly prescribed medications in the geriatric population and their known potential for drug interactions. This literature review will provide a foundation for understanding the scope and significance of the problem, as well as gaps in current knowledge that warrant further investigation. The research methodology will involve a retrospective analysis of medication records from a sample of geriatric patients in a healthcare setting. By examining the medication profiles of these individuals, the study aims to identify potential drug-drug interactions based on established criteria and guidelines. Additionally, demographic and clinical data will be collected to assess the impact of patient characteristics on the risk of DDIs. The findings from the analysis will be presented and discussed in Chapter Four, highlighting the prevalence of potential drug-drug interactions, the specific medications involved, and the potential clinical implications for the geriatric population. The discussion will also explore strategies for mitigating the risks associated with DDIs, such as medication reconciliation, drug regimen reviews, and patient education. In conclusion, this research project will contribute to the body of knowledge on drug-drug interactions in the geriatric population and provide insights into the factors contributing to this issue. The study findings will have implications for healthcare providers, pharmacists, and policymakers in developing strategies to improve medication safety and optimize the quality of care for older adults. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance patient outcomes and reduce the incidence of adverse drug reactions in this vulnerable population.
