Project Abstract

This project aims to develop and evaluate herbal antidiabetic tablets as a promising alternative to conventional synthetic drugs for the management of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to the body's inability to produce or effectively utilize insulin, a hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar. The global prevalence of diabetes has been steadily increasing, with the World Health Organization estimating that the number of individuals living with diabetes will rise from 422 million in 2014 to 628 million by 2045. This surge in diabetes cases highlights the urgent need for effective and accessible treatment options. Conventional antidiabetic drugs, while effective, often come with a range of side effects and contraindications, making them unsuitable for certain patient populations. Furthermore, the high cost of these medications can be a significant barrier to access, particularly in developing countries. In this context, the exploration of herbal remedies as an alternative approach to diabetes management has gained significant attention. The proposed project aims to formulate and evaluate herbal antidiabetic tablets using a combination of medicinal plant extracts. The selection of the plant extracts will be based on their well-documented traditional use and scientific evidence of their antidiabetic properties. The project will involve a comprehensive literature review to identify the most promising herbal ingredients, followed by the standardization and optimization of the extract preparation process. The formulation development phase will focus on designing and optimizing the tablet composition, incorporating the selected herbal extracts along with appropriate excipients to ensure desired physicochemical properties, such as hardness, disintegration time, and drug release profile. The formulation process will be guided by principles of quality-by-design to ensure the consistent production of high-quality tablets. Extensive in vitro and in vivo evaluations will be conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of the developed herbal antidiabetic tablets. In vitro studies will include assays to determine the antidiabetic activity, such as ?-amylase and ?-glucosidase inhibition, as well as assessments of the tablets' physicochemical characteristics and stability. In vivo studies will involve the use of appropriate animal models of diabetes to evaluate the antihyperglycemic, antioxidant, and other relevant pharmacological effects of the herbal formulation. The project will also investigate the potential synergistic interactions between the selected herbal extracts, as well as their mechanisms of action in the management of diabetes. This knowledge will contribute to a deeper understanding of the therapeutic potential of the developed herbal antidiabetic tablets. Upon successful completion, this project aims to provide a safe, effective, and affordable herbal-based alternative for the management of diabetes mellitus. The developed herbal antidiabetic tablets could offer improved patient compliance and accessibility, particularly in resource-limited settings. Furthermore, the findings of this study may pave the way for future clinical trials and the eventual commercialization of the herbal formulation, ultimately benefiting the global diabetic population.
